Hume Sweet Hume
Jenna and Lizza Hume established Hume Sweet Hume in October 1998. Both partners (sister) are originally from Westray and, after formal training in art and design, were keen to return to their Island home, which had provided them with their artistic inspiration. They were also keen to demonstrate that a high quality design business can be operated successfully from a remote island location. They began by designing and knitting interior accessories such as cushions and throws, however eventually their cushions began to grow straps and now their range has expanded to bags, scarves, hats and garments.
Initially they worked from Lizza’s home, working from the kitchen table using knitting machines and a sewing machine. Fortunately they now work from their Mothers building known as the ‘chippy’, situated in Pierowall Village.
Their products are all made with natural fibres. Lambswool and silk blends are sourced in the Scottish Borders but luxury yarns, such as mohair, are imported from Italy. The bought in yarns are then designed and knitted into fabrics, which are hand finished into the various products you see here.
